Silkscreen
Most popular High resolution. Requires film to be produced
Silk Screen printing process characteristics
- Up to 6 colors, any mix of Pantone, white and CMYK process
- 100 LPI for 1-3 colors, 120 LPI for more
- silk screen inks are usually glossy
- can't print dots below ~15% tone value, dots are lost
- tone values above ~90%, holes fill in to solid
Offset
fine detail and tone value extremes are more accurate. Silk Screen dots are more visible and some dots are lost
Offset printing process characteristics
- Up to 6 colors, colors 2-5 are CMYK process from offset plates. Color 1 and 6 are silk screen. Color 1 is usually white donut, color 6 can be clear varnish for gloss or a "kicker" plate silk screen overprint such as Xbox banner or disc number.
- 150 LPI for offset portion
- offset inks are dull (matte)
- all dot sizes are reproduced
Digital
High resolution – One film required (typically $50)
Inkjet
Resolution not as high as silkscreen or digital print, but no films are necessary, and turn times are shorter.
